Qualcomm Snapdragon X Dominates the AI PC Arena

Qualcomm is set to make a major breakthrough in the PC component industry by introducing its next-generation PC system-on-chip (SoC), featuring a custom-designed CPU built on the ARM architecture. This cutting-edge SoC will be rebranded as the Snapdragon X series, marking a departure from the existing 8cx product line. The anticipated launch is in 2024, positioning the Snapdragon X series to become a key player in the burgeoning AI-powered PC landscape.

The Snapdragon X platform promises a substantial boost in performance, AI capabilities, connectivity, and extended battery life. The "X" branding serves to distinguish it from Qualcomm's Snapdragon products tailored for smartphones and other devices.

Don McGuire, Qualcomm's Head of Marketing, has affirmed in a blog post that the Snapdragon X series will incorporate the Oryon CPU, showcasing a remarkable leap in both performance and energy efficiency. Additionally, as a system-on-chip (SoC), the Snapdragon X will feature a GPU and a neural processing unit (NPU), with the NPU engineered to enhance the user experience for the era of Generative AI.

Qualcomm currently stands as the sole manufacturer in the market supplying ARM-based SoCs for Windows on ARM PC devices, shouldering the responsibility of challenging industry giants operating on the x86 architecture.

The market for delivering AI-driven user experiences on PC devices is heating up. In early 2023, AMD unveiled the Ryzen 7040 NB processor with an integrated AI engine, while Intel is set to introduce the Meteor Lake architecture Core Ultra processor with an NPU in December.

Apple's ARM-based Macs, which have featured NPU technology since the launch of the M1 chip in 2020, have already established their presence in the market. Leading PC industry players, including Dell and HP, are enthusiastic about the potential of AI-powered PCs.

However, the future of the Snapdragon X series is clouded by a legal dispute between Qualcomm and ARM. The technology used in Oryon is derived from Nuvia, a startup acquired by Qualcomm in 2021. ARM accuses Qualcomm of violating licensing terms in adopting Nuvia's technology and demands that Qualcomm abandon the Oryon CPU design.
